Associate professor Stephen A. Futrell in the Department of Music appeared as guest vocal soloist with the Spelman College Glee Club and Spelman College music faculty in an Oct. 17 tribute concert to Willie T. Johnson and the Golden Gate Quartet.
The concert included gospel, R&B and jazz selections with rhythm and horn sections.
While at Spelman, Futrell worked with the vocal ensemble on vocal technique and style. His appearance came with an invitation to return to Spelman during the spring semester for a residency that will include a masterclass on fundamental vocal technique and commercial/jazz vocal style, private voice lessons, teaching a seminar in conducting and working with the Spelman Jazz Ensemble in an open rehearsal format.
