An acclaimed poet visits Elon University as a guest of the Liberal Arts Forum.

Tony Hoagland, the author of four volumes of poetry and the recipient of numerous literary awards, will read his poetry in an event sponsored by the Liberal Arts Forum. Admission is free and no ticket is required.
Hoagland is the author of witty poems that serve as commentary on contemporary American life. Born in North Carolina, he grew up in military bases throughout the South and was later educated at Williams College and the University of Iowa. Hoagland received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona.
The author of four volumes of poetry – Unincorporated Personals in the Late Honda Dynasty, What Narcissism Means to Me, Donkey Gospel and Sweet Ruin – his work has appeared in journals and anthologies such as American Poetry Review, Harvard Review and Ploughshares. He is the recipient of the 2005 Mark Twain Award given in recognition of his contribution of humor in American poetry, and the 2005 O.B. Hardison, Jr. Poetry Prize from the Folger Shakespeare Library, the only national prize recognizing a poet’s teaching as well as his art.
The Liberal Arts Forum will host a 5:30 p.m. dinner on Monday in Hoagland’s honor. Student winners of the Frederick Hartmann Poetry Contest will also be recognized at the dinner. The annual contest is sponsored by The English Department with Fall 2011 winners: Alex Trice–1st Place; Rob Shapiro–2nd Place; Alexa Johnson–3rd Place; Jillian Weiss–4th Place.
Honorable mentions were awarded to: Caitlyn Byrne, Victoria Doose, Cody Greene, Jay Light, Michael McFarland and Lina Patton.
On Tuesday morning, Hoagland and students in writing and poetry classes will gather for a question-and-answer session in Whitley Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. Other members from the campus community are welcome to attend.
