Andrew Schwartz, “The Power of Neuronal Populations”
McCrary Theatre, 7:30 p.m.
Dr. Schwartz, professor of Neurobiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, studies how the brain controls voluntary motions such as moving the arm as well as how neuronal activity in the brain (thoughts) can be used to control a robotic prosthesis. Brain-machine interfaces offer hope to people who are paralyzed, potentially enabling them to gain a degree of activity through controlling artificial limbs.
