About the Script
Originally scripted by Langston Hughes and based on the Christmas story in the gospel of St. Luke, Black Nativity is an enduring story of encouragement, hope and expectation. The play follows the birth of Christ through song, dance and rhythm. It is simultaneously a celebration of Christmas and liberation.
About the Performance
Despite the story’s enduring history, every performance adapts with the talents the actors provide. “Our director is really good about accommodating the artist’s talent and perspective and contributes to the change,” says Associate Professor Jean Rattigan-Rohr, a faculty member in the School of Education involved in the performance.
The NCBRC adaptation contains much more core movement which means audiences can expect more dance than other productions they may have attended. The Elon performances will include an actor signing the performance for people in the deaf community to appreciate the show as well.
“The story is the same wherever its told, it’s about the birth of Christ,” Rohr said. “It’s not only enduring, it is uplifting.”
