An Elon University senior has been named one of two American college students to receive a 2011 Presidents Scholarship from the Radio Television Digital News Association.
The world’s largest professional association for electronic news professionals this week named Samantha Baranowski a recipient of the $1,000 honor. Baranowski, a broadcast communications major, is a senior reporter for Phoenix14 News and has held internships at news organizations including 60 Minutes.
Baranowski was also among a small group of Elon University students who traveled to Kenya in the fall to provide coverage of the United Nations-facilitated Global Internet Governance Forum for the university’s Imagining the Internet Center.
“RTDNA as an organization has been so key in helping me explore our industry and solidify my love for news, so to say I’m honored to receive this award is an understatement!” Baranowski said on the RTDNA website. “I am excited to attend EIJ next year for the first time as a local news reporter, instead of a student member and cannot wait to start my career in broadcast journalism.”
Sarah Phinney of Ball State University in Indiana was the other scholarship winner.
