C.H.A.M.P.S. (Coaching Health and Mentoring Positive Students) is a health-focused mentoring program that matches Elon men one-on-one with boys in 4th and 5th grade. Through playing sports, participating in interactive activities, one on one time, and education, and under the supervision of a faculty coordinator, mentors provide guidance on topics like being a team player, handling peer pressure, and managing a healthy lifestyle, and friendship to their young mentee. This fun program is being offered on campus for the 3rd time and has been shown to have a positive effect on self-esteem and health behaviors in young boys.
Sessions will run from 4-5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays on Elon’s campus, beginning with a training program for mentors on Feb. 28 and March 1, and followed by eight program sessions (with time off for both spring breaks) that will end on April 17. Each session will include a warm-up game or fitness circuit, sports skills training under the direction of varsity or club sport athletes, an education piece, and one on one sport or exercise time.
If you are interested in becoming a mentor and are free on T and TH afternoon, please “like” the CHAMPS Facebook page and fill out the attached short application and send it to bbrawerman@elon.edu or Professor Liz Bailey at ebailey@elon.edu. Applications are due by Wednesday, Feb. 22.
