Elon Law students, led by members of the Tax Law Interest Group, will begin filing incomes taxes for local persons who are low-income or over 60, free of charge, during the first week in February through April 12, 2012.
Student volunteers will set-up client appointments, interview clients, and file clients’ taxes. Tax preparation will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Elon Law’s facility at 101 West Friendly Avenue, 1st Floor, in Greensboro (across the street from the law school’s primary facility, the H. Michael Weaver building at 201 N. Greene St.).
Appointments are required. Those interested in making appointments should call (336) 912-0090. The student run Tax Law Interest Group encourages people who may qualify to call to request an appointment. The group is partnering with the local branch of AARP Tax-Aide to offer this IRS Tax Counseling for the Elderly program in Greensboro. Law students preparing taxes will be certified through the IRS through an Intermediate Tax Preparation Training program. They will prepare basic tax returns for households making $49,000 or less in 2011, and persons 60 or older, free of charge.
