About the Richmond Ballet
Local dance enthusiasts founded Richmond Ballet in 1957 as a performance outlet for students in area dance programs. It existed for almost 20 years as a small, civic company until 1975 when the School of Richmond Ballet was founded. The school sparked the evolution from a student company to the professional company that exists today.
Stoner Winslett joined Richmond Ballet in 1980 and four years later became the founding artistic director of the newly-formed professional company—the first in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1990, Gov. L. Douglas Wilder proclaimed Richmond Ballet “The State Ballet of Virginia.” Now in its 28th professional season, the Ballet reaches more than 75,000 people annually with a repertory that includes 56 original works and 50 acquisitions, a school that currently enrolls more than 600 students, and educational and outreach programs that serve communities in Virginia and beyond.
