From Digtriad.com (3/20/12): Anyone in North Caroline has a right to know what city workers do with tax dollars, what they are saying in their work emails and even why a police officer got in trouble and what actions were taken - if they choose.
The state’s public records law allows these rights and is designed to keep North Carolina resident in the know. This is the state’s version of the federal Freedom of Information Act, which many states have adopted and reworked for their residents and keep them in the know.
But a Greensboro council member says, in some cases, the city’s interpretation of that law leaves people in the dark.
Nancy Vaughan says the city is hiding behind some of the technical language in the law to keep residents from accessing certain public records. And she’s calling for the state attorney general to step in.
