Walk to Defeat ALS

ALS, often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s disease,” is a progressive motor neuron disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, damaging both upper and lower motor neurons. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. The vast majority of people with ALS maintain total intellectual awareness throughout the disease process. While there is no known cause or cure, much is being done to promote awareness and understanding of the disease, as well as offering improved treatments for symptoms, and continuing the search for a cure.
Join the Elon Alumni and Mary Anne’s Crew team for the Walk to Defeat ALS! It’s a easy 2 mile walk and kids and dogs are welcome. Please join us in the fight to find a cure and sign up today to be on our team. If you are unable to walk, we hope you will consider making a donation.
