Colin Beavan, the activist behind the book, blog and film “No Impact Man,” comes to Elon University for an April 19 evening lecture in McKinnon Hall that is free and open to the public in celebration of Earth Day.
The talk begins at 7:30 p.m.
In 2006, Beavan, also known as No Impact Man, committed to make as little environmental impact as possible for one year. His journey also included his wife, two-year old daughter and four-year old dog. Colin’s lifestyle change became the subject of his award-wining blog – noimpactman.com, a book and a Sundance-selected documentary.
The purpose of the project was to find ways of living that might both improve quality of life and be less harmful to the planet. It provided a vehicle to attract broad public attention to various environmental issues including: food system sustainability, climate change, water scarcity and energy resource depletion.
Beavan was named one of MSN’s Ten Most Influential Men of 2007, and his blog was named one of the world’s top 15 environmental websites by Time Magazine. The No Impact project has been the subject of stories in national and international news outlets, and Beavan has been a guest on numerous television and radio shows such as The Colbert Report, Nightline and NPR.
Beavan’s talk titled “Saving the World, Being Yourself” begins at 7:30 p.m. in McKinnon Hall. By living a life with no automated transportation, electricity, non-local foods or material consumption, Colin and his family learned about the most important aspects in life and how our current society and habits deprive us from simple pleasures. Colin will talk about how to realistically live a more eco-effective and more content life.
Beavan’s book, No Impact Man: The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal Who Attempts to Save the Planet, and the Discoveries He Makes About Himself and Our Way of Life Along the Way, will be available for purchase, and he will be available for signing after his talk.
Beavan will also be the guest speaker at College Chapel on April 19, which begins at 9:50 a.m. in Whitley Auditorium.
