The Elon University Board of Trustees has elected Aisha Mitchell, a member of the Class of 2012, to a two-year term as a youth trustee on the board.
Mitchell joined the board at its spring retreat held June 1-3.
A Washington, D.C., native, Mitchell received a bachelor of arts degree in international studies. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma academic honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society and Sigma Iota Rho international relations academic honor society. She plans to attend graduate school for international affairs or international development.
While at Elon, Mitchell studied abroad at the Beijing Center International School of Business and Economics during fall 2010. She returned to China in 2011 for a summer internship at the U.S. Consulate Regional Security Office. In January 2012, Mitchell traveled to India as an Elon University Periclean Scholar to promote women’s empowerment through public health in adolescent girls.
In addition to receiving dean’s list or president’s list recognition every semester at Elon, Mitchell received a Phillips-Perry Black Excellence Award for academics annually from 2009-2011.
Mitchell is proficient in conversational Spanish and has achieved intermediate proficiency in Chinese conversation, reading and writing. She served as a study abroad ambassador for the Isabella Cannon International Centre, conducting informational presentations for students interested in going abroad while at Elon.
She held a position on the multicultural leadership roundtable, assisting President Lambert in devising a strategic plan for diversity. She also served as chair of the difficult dialogues committee, organizing monthly programs on campus to promote productive conversations about issues related to diversity.
