The Elon University Office of Admissions will establish a full-time West Coast presence beginning Aug. 1.
Brittany Werts, regional assistant director of admissions, will work specifically with students, families, schools and guidance counselors in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Alaska and Hawaii. Werts joined the Office of Admissions in July 2011 and led recruiting efforts in New England, the university’s second largest recruitment territory. In her new position, she will travel throughout the fall and spring to local, state and national college fairs, in addition to participating in case studies, reception events and individual school visits.
Werts will be based in southern California and is charged with developing strong relationships with students, high school guidance counselors and college counselors up and down the West Coast. She will advise the Dean of Admissions on appropriate standards for admission and West Coast recruitment trends. In addition to recruiting responsibilities, Werts will oversee the marketing and selection process for the university’s Watson and Odyssey Programs.
“Being both a California native and an Elon graduate, I’ll be able to relate to many students who are considering the move east, including what challenges and opportunities they might face in the transition to a community like Elon,” Werts says. “Even more so, I hope to educate students and counselors on the West Coast about colleges and universities that exist beyond the ‘golden fence,’ and what opportunities are waiting out east for them.”
In her new role, Werts will be an active member of the Regional Admissions Counselors of California, an organization that has tripled in size in the last three years due to West Coast recruiting opportunities. Supporting territories outside of California as well, Werts will be active in the Pacific Northwest Association for College Admissions Counseling and the Western Association for College Admissions Counseling.
