The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has created the LSB Honor Roll for Social Responsibility to recognize and motivate student volunteerism and community service.
Under the leadership of Robert Moorman, Frank S. Holt, Jr. Professor of Business Leadership, this program aims to create responsible business professionals who understand how business success is linked to both financial and socially responsible performance.
To earn a place on the honor roll, full-time undergraduate business students must complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service in a semester. Service may be performed through the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement, classes, university sponsored service trips and student organizations. All service activities need to be confirmed by the Kernodle Center.
At the end of the academic year, students who earn a place on the honor roll during the fall and/or the spring semester will be presented with a certificate in honor of their service and will be recognized at a ceremony celebrating their achievements. Students are encouraged to add this achievement to their resumes to show they value the importance of service in their community.
Moorman was motivated to start this program by his belief that business professionals participate in and lead vital community service projects. “The LSB Honor Roll for Social Responsibility offers us the chance to recognize our students who have already started serving this way,” Moorman says.
Along with spreading an awareness to volunteer, this program offers business students the opportunity to apply business skills towards building a socially responsible community.
“Even though too many examples exist of businesses acting in ways that harm society,” Moorman says, “we believe businesses are often agents for social good. One way this occurs is when business professionals, who are skilled in leadership, organization and problem-solving, use their skills to help the communities in which they live.”
Moorman believes students can benefit from this program academically, personally and professionally. “The LSB Honor Roll for Social Responsibility exists to recognize business students who have made the important decision to lead in the community in which they learn,” Moorman says. “Our interest is to celebrate these efforts and encourage our students to continue this work as they enter their business careers.”
