The Office of Sustainability is focused on energy conservation in the month of September, encouraging students, faculty and staff to decrease energy consumption. Everyone is encouraged to get involved. Get started with the simple steps below.
You can also read up on Elon’s energy conservation initiatives.
Energy conservation strategies:
– Turn off lights when you leave a room.
– Use compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). They use 75 percent less energy and last up to 10 times longer.
– Use natural daylight whenever possible.
– Unplug electronics when they are not in use, and enable energy settings on computers to save energy and battery life.
– Dry clothes on an indoor clothes rack whenever possible.
– When you do need the dryer, clean the lint filter to ensure your dryer is running as efficiently as possible.
– Try to use large appliances, such as the washer, dryer and dishwasher, during off-peak hours, after 6:30 p.m. and before 9:30 a.m
Don’t forget about the POWERless competition, Elon’s residential energy competition! It begins September 18, with an official kick-off at College Coffee, and ends October 9.
Students can monitor their residence hall’s consumption with the Building Dashboard.
