Elon Sustainability’s October theme is Eat Seasonally, shop sustainably. We encourage you to use the tips below to reduce your food-related environmental impact.
-Eat foods in season. They taste great and require less transportation to get to your plate.
-Support local farms by purchasing their produce and other items. Find a farmers’ market near you at
-Look for food products in compostable or recyclable packaging. Even better, use your own reusable containers to transport food, when it is an option.
-Remember to use the composting bins while on campus. Composting bins are available in Fountain Market and Octagon. Be sure to read the signs outlining what is compostable and what is trash.
-Make an effort to eat less meat. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates about 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions are derived from meat production.
-Consider organic food items, which are produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity. Click here to learn more.
-Attend the local lunch in Colonnades Dining Hall on Oct. 24 (National Food Day) from 11am to 1pm.
