Environmental Studies alum publishes research

Environmental Studies graduate, David Munoz, co-authored a recent publication in the Herpetological Conservation and Biology Journal titled "Use of Wildlife Detector Dogs to Study Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene Carolina Carolina) Populations."

The research, which appeared in the journal’s September 2012 edition, was conducted with Joshua Kapfer (formerly of the Environmental Studies Department) and Elon’s Associate Professors of Education Terry Tomasek.  This important research was conducted during Munoz’s senior year at Elon and makes a valuable contribution to the field of herpetology as it offers a systematic analysis for the comparison of two survey techniques.

Munoz completed his B.S. in environmental and ecological science at Elon in May 2012. He began participating in herpetofaunal and small mammal surveys during the second year of his undergraduate degree and has become involved in a variety of field-based ecological studies since. During the summer of 2012, Munoz worked as a biological intern for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge. He will then pursue future graduate studies in wildlife ecology and conservation biology.
