November 8, 2:30-4:00 pm, Spence Pavilion 200
Dr. Robert Nash will lead a conversation about helping students to find a sense of meaning and purpose. Nash has written extensively about this topic, and he has practical suggestions for how to help students do this important work inside the classroom in many different disciplines.
Nash centers his approach on questions that students ask, questions like these:
- “What does it mean to be successful?
- How do I tell my parents that the career they have chosen for me is not the one I want?
- Where do my deepest passions lie, and can I really carve out a career that reflects these?
- Why am I here in school when I could be doing something more constructive in the world beyond campus?
- How, if at all, can I clean up all the messes in the world caused by wars, environmental decay, corporate greed, social injustice, political corruption, and irrelevant education?” (from Nash & Murray, Helping College Students Find Purpose, xv-xvi).

Robert Nash is Official University Scholar in the Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Vermont, and author of a dozen books college, including Helping College Students Find Purpose (2010) and How to Talk about Hot Topics on Campus (2008).
