Elon University was one of 17 master’s level colleges and universities listed by the Chronicle of Higher Education on Oct. 28 as a “top producing” institution of students who received Fulbright grants in 2012-13.
The Chronicle published a special section on the U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Scholar Program. The list of top producers of U.S. Fulbright students, by type of Carnegie Classification, was included in the section. Among the universities joining Elon on the list of master’s level institutions that produced 2012-13 academic scholars were Rollins College, Villanova University and Gonzaga University.
Jensen Suther and Shannalee Van Beek, both members of the Class of 2012, are overseas for on Fulbright grants for both research and teaching purposes. Suther, an English major with minors in philosophy and German studies, is in Frankfurt, Germany, studying the relationship between the philosophical projects of Jacques Derrida and Theodor Adorno.
Van Beek, an international studies and English double major, visited Bahrain in the Persian Gulf to teach English this fall.
Two Elon University young alumni also received Fulbright grant awards last spring. Natalie Patricia Lampert ’11 and Hunter Somerville Gros ’10 were each awarded Fulbright Program grants for teaching. Lampert is in Sri Lanka, and Gros traveled to India.
Elon’s efforts to assist students in securing Fulbright fellowships are led by Professor Janet Myers, director of national & international fellowships, and Meredith Malburne-Wade, associate director of national & international fellowships.
From the Institute of International Education, which administers the Fulbright program:
The Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program, is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State. Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 300,000 participants—chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
