Jeff Carpenter, assistant professor in the School of Education, presented at the National Council of Teachers of English Annual Convention in Las Vegas.
Carpenter’s presentation, attended by approximately 70 people, was entitled “Using Googleforms to Transform Student Writing.” It described work that he has done in his own classes at Elon, and with former colleagues at Carrboro High School, using Googleforms to enhance writing instruction and assessment. Googleforms are part of the free Googledrive suite of cloud-based tools and allow teachers to create feedback forms tailored to individual writing assignments.
Based initially on collaboration with Barbara Taylor, associate professor in Department of Computing Sciences, Carpenter now uses the forms to support self assessment, and peer assessment, to target his writing instruction based on this student-generated assessment data, and to expedite the grading process.
