The Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning announces the recipients of the Fall 2012 Teaching and Learning Grants.
Eric Bauer, Biology Department, and Amy Overman, Psychology Department, will use their funds to purchase spiker boxes and related accessories in support of Teaching Students Neural Functioning through Direct Experience with Action Potentials, $1170. Also in Biology, Yuko Miyamoto received support for Developing Fluorescent Microscope Labs for Cell Biology and Genetics, $4179. In support of the new Bio-chemistry major, Kathryn Matera and Victoria Moore will use $4990 to purchase equipment to enhance the biochemistry labs. Professor Srikant Vallabhajosula in Physical Therapy Education received support for Three Dimensional Biomechanical Analyses of Human Movement for Teaching and Learning, $3200.
Hallie Hogan, Department of Music, received support for Master Classes with Alison Pearce, $2700. Also in music, Virginia Novine-Whittaker will use her award of $1250 to purchase instruments for One World, One Voice: Elon Music Ambassadors Experience, and department chair Matthew Buckmaster received $2000 to support Transforming Music Instruction Pedagogy. Karl Green, in the Performing Arts department, will receive $2400 to support the funding for Fabric for Use in Costume Construction Courses.
Professor Courtnay Micots, in the Art and Art History department, will use her grants to support two new classes: Art Exhibition: Then and Now In West Africa and Fancy Dress/Carnaval Street Parade and Party, in the amounts of $750 and $600, respectively.
The Teaching and Learning Grant Review committee included faculty members Bill Webb, Jennifer Uno, Svetlana Nepocatych, Mary Knight-McKenna, Harlen Makemson, and Philip Miller.
The CATL Teaching and Learning Grants program supports innovative teaching and learning projects. Grants typically range from $1,000 to $5,000, although smaller and larger proposals will be considered. Grants generally support start-up and one-time expenses (materials, stipends, and so on), rather than paying for ongoing operational costs.
