Ketevan Kupatadze, Spanish lecturer, and Jessie Moore, associate professor in English, presented at South Atlantic Modern Language Association on Nov. 11.
Kupatadze presented “The Role of Students’ Attitudes Towards Foreign Language Writing and
the Problems and Opportunities of Transfer,” featuring research from her participation in the Elon Research Seminar on Critical Transitions: Writing and the Question of Transfer.
Moore presented “A 20×20 Introduction to Writing Transfer Research,” a Pecha Kucha-style presentation on the history of writing transfer research and the multi-institutional projects being supported by the Elon Research Seminar.
The 2011-13 Elon Research Seminar on Critical Transitions facilitates multi-institutional research on how writers apply knowledge and experiences from one context to another. For instance, how do students writing experiences in their first language impact their writing in a second language? And how do students transfer what they learn in first-year writing courses to their writing in the disciplines and beyond the university? Forty participants from over 20 institutions in five countries are exploring these type of questions through the seminar, which is sponsored by the Center for Engaged Learning at Elon.
More work from the Elon Research Seminar will be featured at the Critical Transitions: Writing and the Question of Transfer Conference on June 25-26, 2013.
