Exploring topics such as kill switches and smart mobs, Elon Law Professor Enrique Armijo presented research on the ways in which government control over communications infrastructure can pose a threat to free speech.
Armijo discussed the tension between regulation of social media and freedom of expression both domestically and abroad. He spoke about his work on international media law reform projects in Africa and the Middle East and his approaches to developing research in the areas if digital communications law and policy.
Armijo’s presentation, which took place November 1, was part of the Mary Junck Research Colloquium Series in the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The UNC Center for Media Law & Policy is an interdisciplinary research center run jointly out of the UNC School of Law and UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Armijo has provided advice on media and internet law reform to governments, stakeholders and NGOs located around the world, including in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. His commentaries on these and other topics have appeared on NPR’s On the Media and WUNC-FM.
