Billy Stevens, “Sincere Forms of Flattery: Blacks, Whites, and American Popular Music”
Whitley Auditorium, 7:30 p.m.
American music is a natural outgrowth of the unique culture of the American South with its roots in slavery and the fusion of musical traditions brought from both Africa and Europe. Using musical instruments as well as rare recordings, Stevens discusses the relationship between jazz, blues, ragtime and gospel.
This project is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. On campus, the program is being sponsored by AAASE, BHMSC and Elon University.
