Courtnay Micots, “Architectural Displays of Prestige and Resistance in Colonial Ghana”
Yeager Recital Hall, 6 p.m.
Why do some old African buildings in coastal Ghana look like stately British homes? This talk will explore the appropriation of British architectural elements in Ghanaian elite architecture constructed between the 1860s and 1920s. Through careful analysis of the styles, history and patrons, these homes are revealed as markers of status that were refashioned in order to counter the growing authority of the British administration.
