Statistics indicate that many American smokers are interested in putting down the cigarettes at the start of a new year, but kicking the habit is tough for some.
The Office of Substance Education is offering free FreshStart smoking cessation classes in February to Elon University students, faculty and staff. Alamance Regional Medical Center staff will run the classes scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 5, Feb. 7, Feb. 12 and Feb. 14. The location of the class is still to be announced.
Smoking cessation support, whether it’s through classes, counseling or the use of medication, can double or even triple a smoker’s chance of successfully quitting, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In addition to the classes, faculty and staff can get a prescription from a physician assistant at the Wellness Center for medications that assist smokers trying to quit. Those medications are free with Elon University’s health insurance.
