Jessie Moore, Kim Pyne, and Paula Patch – all faculty in the Department of English – write about a College Writing and Elon Academy collaboration in their recent peer-reviewed article for Composition Forum.
In “Writing the Transition to College: A Summer College Writing Experience at Elon University,” the English faculty describe a College Writing/Elon Academy summer partnership that offers a program model for supporting underrepresented students’ transitions to college. While the modified section of Elon’s required first-year writing course (ENG 110) has some limitations, the summer course supported students’ development of more complex writing processes and provided access to college capital prior to their university matriculation.
Moore, Pyne, and Patch describe the course design, assess the partnership outcomes, and share recommendations for designing transitional writing courses for underrepresented students.
The article appears in the journals Spring 2013 issue, and the project was supported, in part, by a grant from the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.
