UPDATE: The Turnage Conference, which was to be sponsored, in part, by the Sunshine Center of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition, has been postponed because of a scheduling conflict with a speaker. A new date for the conference hasn't been set, but it won't happen during Elon University's spring semester. When and if the conference is rescheduled, we will let you know. The Sunshine Center of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition is teaming up with The Turnage Family Faculty Innovation and Creativity Fund for the Study of Political Communication to host this year’s Turnage Conference. The half-day event will start at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013 on Elon University’s campus.
This year’s conference theme is “Strengthening Democracy” and will feature a keynote address from Susan Crawford, a professor at Cardozo Law School and an adjunct professor at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. She recently authored “Captive Audience: The Telecom Industry and Monopoly Power in the New Gilded Age.”
The conference will also include a panel focusing on maintaining democracy in a new, open and transparent media environment and a dinner for invited guests, which will be followed by Crawford’s speech.
The Turnage Family Faculty Innovation and Creativity Fund for the Study of Political Communication, established by Dave Turnage, supports Elon University faculty members pursuing the study of political communication and media literacy.
The Sunshine Center is the education arm of the N.C. Open Government Coalition whose mission is to foster awareness and knowledge of the state’s open government laws. The Sunshine Center is housed at Elon University in the School of Communications.
