Elon Law students Kelsey Roth, Joe Doren, Janison Dillon and Kristen Seum won the team competition in the race. Alex Hazel L’09 won the women’s category and Andy Rinehart won the men’s category.
The Barbara Sullivan 5K Race for Women’s Health is named for the mother of Ann Sullivan L’09, a former Women’s Law Association (WLA) member. Every year, the WLA honors the memory of Barbara Sullivan, who lost her life to a brain tumor, and other members of its association and their families by donating proceeds from the race to health issues that have affected them.
All proceeds from the 2013 race, held March 2, were donated to Piedmont Family Services, in support of the nonprofit organization’s programs to support those who have been affected by domestic violence.
WLA Philanthropy Committee Chair Caitlin Cutchin L’14 organized this year’s race.
“Family Service of the Piedmont ended up being selected as our race charity because of the wonderful work they do to provide shelter, counseling services and advocacy for victims and their families,” Cutchin said, noting that the WLA had raised more than $1,500 for the nonprofit. “I am extremely appreciative of everyone that helped make the race a success and I am looking forward to helping the WLA set even loftier goals for next year.”
In the fifth annual race, Elon Law Professor Mike Rich and alumnus Michael Lucente L’09 placed second and third in the men’s category respectively. Sarah Lucente L’09 and Andrea Dancy Harrell L’09 placed second and third respectively in the women’s category.
“The most rewarding part of being the race director was standing at the end of the race and watching everybody cross the finish line,” Cutchin said. “We had a very broad range of running skill levels and I was incredibly impressed with everybody that was able to finish. Running 3.1 miles is definitely nothing to sneeze at, particularly on a cold, cloudy morning in early March. I am proud to be a part of an Elon Law tradition that is now five years old and I definitely look forward to coming back to run in it as an alum.”
The Women’s Law Association is a student-run organization at Elon Law, supporting educational, professional and personal development for all individuals concerned with women’s issues and the law by sponsoring professional, philanthropic and social events.
