Mary Gowan, professor of management in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, was an invited speaker on March 13, 2013, at the 14th Annual Conference, "Changes in Job Market: Job Uncertainty," sponsored by the Center for the Study of Organizations and Human Resource Management at the University of Haifa, Haifa, Israel.
The conference included presentations by both practitioners and academics. Gowan’s presentation was entitled “Surviving a Job Loss: Lessons Learned from Research and Practice.”
The presentation reviewed research on the experience of job loss and offered recommendations for individuals experiencing a job loss, outplacement programs assisting those seeking reemployment, companies hiring the unemployed, and public policy designed to address this societal issue. Recent research on reemployment quality, underemployment, career exploration and planning, and employability provided the backdrop for the recommendations.
