"Garden Studio" class to host plant sale & strawberry festival – May 10

With support from the Department of Environmental Studies and the Center for Environmental Studies,  students of the spring semester course “Garden Studio” will host the annual Heirloom Plant Sale and Strawberry Festival on Friday, May 10, from 1:30-5:30 p.m. at the Elon Community Garden between Powell House and the Sklut Hillel Center.

The event (410 E. College Avenue in Elon) features plants for sale, strawberry treats and music.

Plants go on sale right at 1:30 with some light refreshments available, and the strawberry delights will be made available at 3 p.m. as classes get out and local school children are done for the day. Delights include strawberry beverages, strawberry ice cream, strawberry shortcake and berries for dipping.

All plants were seeded in a campus greenhouse, are potted with a signature soil blend that includes compost made at the garden, and are sold in pots made of composted cow manure, which can be put directly into the ground.

An array of heirloom tomatoes, peppers both hot and sweet, and German and Chinese cucumbers will be available. This year the class is specializing in a wide selection of exotic basil plants, from basic Genovese to reds, purples, cinnamons, lemon-lime, and a few rare Persian Blue Spice basils. Some zinnias will also be on sale.
