The Phoenix football player has received the award for post-grad study in a sports-related program.
Elon linebacker Blake Thompson has been selected as one of 13 recipients of the 2013-14 Ethnic Minority Enhancement Program Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics.
This award is presented to students who will be enrolled in a sports-related program as a full-time graduate student during the 2013-14 academic year.
Thompson will be joining the Teach for America movement toward educational equity and equality this summer as a member of the Alabama Corps. He will then pursue a master’s degree in social justice education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Thompson, who wants to become a principal, would eventually like to open his own school.
During his time at Elon, Thompson has been heavily involved with serving the community. He has served as a counselor at YMCA camps, a CHAMPS mentor and volunteered with Loaves and Fishes and RCS Head Start. Twice Thompson has served as the coordinator for the annual Phoenix Field Day on campus. He has also served as a student-athlete liaison with Special Olympics. This year, Thompson was the vice-president of Elon’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Academically, Thompson has been the recipient of the Phillips and Perry Black Excellence Award three times, has been an Academic All-SoCon honoree and earned AD Honor Roll accolades.
