Elon University is partnering with community organizations to collect items for donation at the end of the year as students move out.
If you strike out using E-net’s “Want Ads” and there’s not enough room in your car for that pink futon or the funky table lamp on your desk, instead of heading for the nearest Dumpster with your furniture or other household items, make a charitable donation to a local charity.
From Friday, May 17, through Tuesday, May 28, clothing, electronics, bedding, non-perishable food, gently used furniture and other small household items will be collected and donated to area organizations. Drop-off locations for clean and gently-used items include the Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity trucks in the Elon Community Church parking lot and residential area offices.
Items will be donated to the following partners: First Presbyterian Church of Burlington (bedding), Allied Churches (non-perishable food), Goodwill (clothing, electronics) and the Habitat Re-Store (furniture).
Furniture: Large pieces of furniture should be dropped off at the Elon Community Church parking lot. Don’t have a way of getting your furniture to the parking lot? Call the Habitat Re-Store at 336-222-8292 to schedule a pickup.
Electronics: New this year, electronics will be collected throughout ‘Don’t Trash It!’ and will not be limited to a specific day. The following electronic-related items are accepted: computers, computer accessories, monitors, fax machines, printers, scanners, video game equipment, video games, CDs, DVDs, cables, cords, routers, modems, televisions, unopened ink cartridges, DVD players, cell phones and calculators. For computers, Goodwill will erase all hard drives and remove information before reselling or demanufacturing for recycling. For televisions, be sure to label them as broken or in working order. Broken televisions will be disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
The following items are NOT accepted as part of Don’t Trash It: items with refrigerants (refrigerators, air conditioners); household chemicals or other chemicals of any kind; equipment containing or having been in contact with any chemicals or liquids; commercial or institutional material.
All students, faculty and staff are invited to participate. Help people and the planet prosper by keeping items out of landfills and donating them to those in need.
“Don’t Trash It!” is an annual event coordinated by Habitat for Humanity, the Office of Sustainability, and the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement.
