Squads were honored June 5, 2013, when the NCAA announced its latest academic progress report for Division I sports teams.
Elon’s men’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s track teams for both indoor and outdoor competition, men’s soccer and men’s tennis are among the NCAA Division I teams receiving public recognition awards for their academic performances, the NCAA announced Wednesday.
Elon University is one of only 61 schools nationwide to have received public recognition awards for each of the eight years of the NCAA program. In the Southern Conference, it is one of just three schools – including Davidson and Wofford – to place at least seven teams on the most recent list.
Each year, the NCAA honors selected college teams by showcasing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. The announcement is part of an overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving top APRs within their respective sports.
Specifically, more than 950 NCAA teams this year posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.
The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-2012 academic years.
