Elon is introducing a new car-sharing program to campus this fall, which gives students, faculty and staff an alternative to having their own vehicles on campus.
Elon University has partnered with a new company to provide a campus car-sharing service. Beginning this month, Enterprise CarShare takes over for the Zipcar program that had been available since 2007.
Enterprise CarShare provides lower overall vehicle rental rates and a local service team to maintain the vehicles. It provides access to four fuel-efficient vehicles parked in the Moseley Center parking lot, and vehicle reservations can be made online 24/7 at low rates for hourly, daily or overnight usage.
Rental rates include gas, insurance and 200 miles per day.
Car-sharing has been a successful program with more than 500 people in the campus community currently participating in the program, said Elaine Durr, director of sustainability at the university. It represents a great option for students without a vehicle and is also ideal for faculty and staff who carpool to campus and need to use a vehicle during the day and/or for short business and personal trips.
All current Zipcar members (students, faculty and staff) can join the Enterprise CarShare program for free through mid-November. They will receive an email from Durr with the appropriate link to the easy, one-time application process.
Students not currently using the Zipcar program can join the Enterprise CarShare program for a $35 annual membership fee and as part of that registration will receive $35 in driving credits, which will not expire.
Faculty and staff not currently using the Zipcar program can join the Enterprise CarShare program for a $25 application fee. Faculty and staff using the program for business use must be on the university’s approved driver list. Contact Valerie Cheek with questions about this list. Those who want to use the Enterprise CarShare program for business use should contact Elaine Durr to have their department established in the system.
Through August 30, anyone who joins the Enterprise CarShare program has the option to pick-up his/her new member kit (including membership card) in the Moseley Center, near the Information Desk, rather than receive it via standard mail. The days and times for member kit pick-up will be sent to those who select that option when completing the online member application form, once their application is approved. That information is also available here. This option allows members to begin using the program sooner.
