The Golf Channel commentator spoke with Elon Law students in a Sports Law class and with friends of the law school at a Greensboro luncheon on September 3, providing a “behind the ropes" inside look at golf, the state of the game today and the intricacies of television broadcasting.
Elon Law visiting distinguished practitioner-in-residence David R. Maraghy welcomed Foltz to his Sports Law class and provided introductory remarks at the luncheon for friends and supporters of Elon Law.
“Guest speakers from professional sports and broadcasting industries provide law students with inside perspectives on business aspects of sports and entertainment law,” Maraghy said. “We were pleased to welcome Jerry Foltz, who is in the midst of a distinguished career in sports broadcasting after achieving success on the course as a professional golfer as well.”
Foltz has worked for the Golf Channel since 1999 and has covered every tour for the network. Currently, he is the play-by-play host for the Golf Channels Web.com Tour and select PGA Tour coverage. He also reports on the course for the PGA Tour and the LPGA Tour. Foltz focused his remarks on business dimensions of sports broadcasting, taking time to note the success of the region’s own PGA Tour event.
“The success of the Wyndham Championship is a testament to the strength of this community,” Foltz said. “Making the Wyndham such an important and integral part of the PGA Tour is a tremendous achievement and you all should tip your caps to each other for that success.”
In his remarks, Foltz spoke on a range of topics, including the activity of investors to purchase rights to sports content, strategic planning to manage the rapid growth in digital content platforms and other distribution sources, and the growth in sports broadcasting more broadly.
