Gabie Smith named associate dean of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences

Professor Gabie Smith has been named associate dean of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences, and will start in her new position on Jan. 2, 2014. She succeeds Professor Maurice Levesque, who was recently named an associate provost for the university.
 
Smith started at Elon in 2000 and currently chairs the Department of Psychology.
 
Known on campus and beyond for her excellence in teaching, Smith has taught senior seminars, non-experimental research methods, health psychology, empirical research in psychology, psychological perspectives on human sexuality, and the psychology or sex and gender. She also teaches “Paths of Inquiry in the Arts & Sciences,” the Elon College Fellows Winter Term course, and the Elon College Fellows sophomore and junior seminars. 

Internationally, Smith has taught “Self-Identity in Cultural Context” as a London Winter Term course, as well as “Identity Across Cultures: Great Britain in London.”
 
Smith was awarded the Elon College of Arts & Sciences Excellence in Scholarship Award in 2010. She has 11 peer-reviewed publications and 14 presentations at international and national conferences since becoming an associate professor, and she has published several pedagogical and professional documents. Smith was recently awarded a Summer Fellowship from the Faculty Research and Development Committee, and she received a Diversity Infusion Project Grant.
 
In addition to chairing the Department of Psychology, Smith has served as a member of the Presidential Task Force on Vendor Policies, and the Search Committee for the LGBTQIA Faculty Fellow. She has served on the Committee on Online Education Policies, the Social Science Curriculum Committee, the Public Health Advisory Committee, the Long Range Planning Committee and the Interdisciplinary Committee on Course-Based Alcohol Education. 

Smith chaired the Academic Council Task Force on the Evaluation of Teaching, coordinated the Women’s/Gender Studies Minor, co-chaired the Presidential Advisory Council on Sexual Assault & Gender Issues, and has chaired the Undergraduate Research Program Advisory Committee, the Student Life Committee and the Psychology Department Search Committee. She has also co-chaired the Student Undergraduate Research Forum Committee.
