As the university gathers to celebrate its quasquicentennial, the Black Alumni Network celebrates the accomplishments of black students throughout the institution's history.
Besides marking Elon’s 125th anniversary, this Homecoming also marks an important milestones in the history of Black students at Elon, for it was in the fall of 1963 that Glenda Phillips Hightower became the first black full-time student to attend Elon College, opening the doors for many generations of students to come.
Fifty years later, Elon black students and alumni continue to make a significant impact on the Elon community.
During Homecoming weekend, Nov. 8-10, Elon’s Black alumni will come home to Elon to celebrate their 50-year history. On the evening of Nov. 9, the Elon Black Alumni Network will host the Black Alumni Scholarship Gala and present the following alumni awards for demonstrated commitment to the Elon community and the university’s students:

- Ruby Thornton ’99

Established in 2007, the Black Alumni Scholarship fund is intended to help make an Elon education available to deserving black students. From every gala ticket sold, $10 will go directly towards the scholarship fund to help continue this legacy.
