No Man’s Land – Winner of Academy Award for Best Foreign Film (2001, dir: Tanovic, Bosnia)
Themes: Ethnic/religious conflict, civil war (Bosnia), international humanitarian intervention, media and war, questions of global ethics and responsibility
The war in Bosnia (1992-5) is a significant illustration of 20th century ethnic cleansing and genocide and was a major challenge for the international community as they debated how to respond to the crisis, eventually using force to bring the three sides (Bosnian Serbs, Croats, and Muslims) to the negotiating table in 1995. In a fictional account, No Man’s Land is a satire or dark comedy about the 1990s war and the role of the United Nations and the global media. A Bosnian and a Serb are trapped in ‘no man’s land,’ while a fellow soldier lies in the trench with a spring loaded bomb beneath him. Can they find common ground as Bosnians or are they doomed to rivalry?
