Evening for Elon series makes stops in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. 

Evening for Elon events held in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 9 and Baltimore on Oct. 10 gave more than 400 alumni, parents and friends the opportunity to reconnect with Elon. 

President Leo M. Lambert kicked off both events with updates highlighting Elon’s yearlong 125th anniversary celebration and success stories of Elon alumni. Each event also featured a screening of a new film by Tim Johnson ’09 and Max Cantor ’10 that captures the Elon alumni experience.

Event attendees learned details about Elon’s upcoming move to the Colonial Athletics Association from Dave Blank, the university’s director of athletics. Elon begins competing in the CAA during the 2014-15 academic year.

“We are excited to be in the footprint of the CAA. Now we can bring the maroon life to you in ways we haven’t been able to do in the past,” said Blank, referencing CAA member schools such as Towson University, James Madison University, and University of Richmond that will put Elon athletic contests in closer proximity to D.C. and Baltimore fans than ever before. 

Joining Blank in Baltimore was former Elon football player Aaron Mellette ’13, who told the crowd that his recent selection to the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens was the best experience of his life second only to graduating from Elon in May.

The D.C. Evening for Elon featured special guest Charlie Cook, Elon parent and editor of The Cook Political Report. The political analyst briefly addressed the crowd about today’s political climate.  

“It was great to see over 300 alumni and parents at the event in Washington, D.C.,” said Amanda Robinson, coordinator of regional alumni engagement. “We encourage all alumni to connect with Elon regularly, whether it’s by joining the Elon Network on LinkedIn or attending chapter events. There are so many benefits to being part of the growing network of alumni.”

The events continued the success of this year’s Evening for Elon series, which began in September with an event in New York City. Hosted by Elon trustee Ed Doherty and his wife, Joan, the event brought nearly 700 guests to The Plaza Hotel’s grand ballroom.

Evenings for Elon are sponsored by the Office of Alumni Engagement to strengthen ties between the university and alumni, parents and friends around the nation. Upcoming events are scheduled in Greensboro on Oct. 24 and Atlanta on Dec. 5.
