An October 24 forum featuring Elon Law Professor Steven Friedland and Robert Luisana, Managing Partner at Pilot Benefits, sought to clarify policies set forth in the Affordable Care Act.
Friedland and Luisana provided insights in a program entitled, “Demystifying the Health Care Exchanges.” The event was sponsored by the Healthcare and Bioethics Society at Elon Law.
“With so much misinformation out there, it is useful to have some clarity about the law and how it applies,” Friedland said. “Someone has to assist companies in interpreting and complying with these laws.”
Friedland and Luisana outlined how the Affordable Care Act will impact Americans, and specifically North Carolinians. The program outlined the process of obtaining health insurance under the Affordable Care Act and answered general questions relating to the healthcare mandate, including federal subsidies for purchasing insurance and the penalties that will be imposed if individuals elect not to purchase health insurance.
Friedland and Luisana presented similar forums in Greensboro for the local Chamber of Commerce and to the administrators at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) with the hope of disseminating accurate information about the Affordable Care Act.
“People should know what the individual mandate means, who is eligible for subsidies, what the exchanges actually do and how the new calculus for determining rates will affect those who are seeking health care coverage,” said Friedland.
