Mentors for the GSK Women in Science Scholars Program connected with their mentees and visited a biotechnology class on Nov. 5.
Mentors from the GlaxoSmithKline Women in Science Scholars Program, Rosemarie Pladna and Kathryn Collison, came to campus to meet with their mentees, Haley Hawkins (an exercise science major) and Anna Lewis (a physics major), on Nov. 5. The GSK program supports undergraduate women majoring in science.
In addition to receiving a renewable scholarship, honorees are assigned a GSK woman scientist to serve as their personal mentor. GSK hosts two meetings a year in Research Triangle Park when mentors connect with their mentees. Chris Esters of University Advancement arranged this additional opportunity for the mentors and mentees to meet. Afterward, the mentors talked with biology majors in Linda Niedziela’s biotechnology course (Biology 348) about their own career paths and provided advice for students seeking employment in pharmaceutical companies after college.
