Elon University's Isabella Cannon Global Education Center created a program that allows students to spend a full semester living, learning and interning in the "Big Apple."
Elon University’s Office of Domestic Programs in the Global Education Center, better known as “Study USA,” is introducing a new semester “Elon in New York City” program beginning in August 2014.
The Elon in NYC Fall program will join the Spring Elon in Los Angeles semester-long program, currently operating in its second year. Students will have a unique opportunity to live, learn and do an internship in the nation’s largest metropolitan area through a partnership with Marymount Manhattan College and the program includes several components that offer a distinctive, engaged learning experience.
Students will be housed at the renowned “92nd Street Y” facility in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The facility offers double room accommodations with a kitchen and common space. The 92Y is well-known for its world class cultural programming, as well as educational and wellness programs.
Along with living space, the cost of housing includes access to an array of cultural programming such as readings and performances about literature, politics, culture and health.
In addition to taking 12 credit hours at Marymount Manhattan, a professional development course will be taught by an Elon staff member. Through this course, students will assess their strengths and interests to create a professional plan through networking with career professionals, including Elon alumni. The course will also have an internship component to allow students to gain an extra two to four hours of credit while gaining pre-professional experience.
“This program will be an attractive complement to our popular spring semester in Los Angeles, and it represents the recent growth in our summer program in New York City,” said Phil Smith, interim director of Study USA.
The Summer Term Elon in NYC program was enrolled to capacity in early February, weeks before the application deadline. In the semester program’s pilot year, fall enrollment will be limited to 20 students.
“The Elon in NYC semester program will change students’ lives,” said Associate Provost Connie Ledoux Book. “I look forward to the first group of brave students ready for an adventure in learning in the Big Apple.”
Students interested in the program should contact the Study USA office at studyusa@elon.edu or (336) 278-6765. Tuition and fees are expected to equal just over $22,000, and students’ regular financial aid packages do apply. Applications for Fall 2014 Elon in NYC are open now and admission will continue on a rolling basis until the program is full. Click here to apply.
