MARCH 9 SUNDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE (2:30 P.M.)

Full power was restored to the Danieley Center residential neighborhood Sunday afternoon and students are being allowed back into their rooms. Danieley Center was the final campus residential neighborhood to be brought back online by Duke Power following an overnight snow and ice storm from Thursday into Friday.

ORIGINAL POST from SATURDAY, MARCH 8

The following message from Smith Jackson, vice president for Student Life and dean of students, was delivered to students as the university continues to restore power to parts of campus affected by this week’s winter storm.

The power has been restored in all areas of campus affected by Friday’s ice and snow storm, except for the Danieley Residential Neighborhood. Residents of Danieley have partial power in all buildings but may not stay there tonight since the fire alarm and emergency lighting systems are not operational until the power is fully restored. Some students in apartments off campus also do not have electricity; we ask students off campus without power to let us know so we can begin to find students, faculty and staff with whom you may stay if you don’t have power as we go into the week. I ask that anyone willing to invite students to stay with them to let me know.

The Moseley Center will be open for students to stay overnight, with areas to sleep on the second floor and gathering space available in Irazu and the first floor Student Center area. Any faculty or staff without power who wish to stay in Moseley can be accommodated in an office space. Call the Moseley desk at ext. 7215 if interested.

Belk Library and Campus Recreation are operating on regular hours this evening. Dining locations are all running on their usual Saturday night schedule, which includes Lakeside until 8 p.m., Biscuitville until 9 p.m., Topio’s and Varsity until 1 a.m., and McEwen until 3 a.m.

Students, faculty and staff who wish to shower in the Koury Athletic Center are welcomed. Campus Recreation is open until 10 p.m. tonight and will be open from 10 a.m. to midnight Sunday. Those wishing to use the showers should bring towels, soap and shampoo.

I thank the students, staff, faculty and community support personnel who have shown patience and goodwill as we have worked through this very unusual weather related situation to meet students’ needs, restore power, host the Fellows weekend events and bring the campus back to its normal activities.
