Elon University's vice president for Student Life shares updates on campus conditions with parents of students impacted by a recent winter storm.
MESSAGE from SUNDAY, MARCH 9, 2014
Dear Parents,
I just sent students, faculty and staff a message updating them on the status of campus. I want to ensure you are also up to date; therefore, I have included that message below.
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
Full power was restored to campus Sunday afternoon and all academic buildings, residence halls and campus apartments are now open, except for Belk Pavilion, which was damaged Friday by a downed tree in the Academic Village. Classes and offices will operate tomorrow per our normal schedule. Please see the revised classroom locations on E-net for those courses previously assigned to Belk Pavilion. Anyone with maintenance concerns should call Campus Safety and Police today at 278-5555, or Physical Plant on Monday at 278-5500.
Those of you residing off campus who do not have electricity are welcome to take showers in the Koury Athletic Center, eat in the dining halls, recharge cell phones, or use the Internet available at the university. In addition, several faculty, staff and students have offered to house anyone without power. If you would like to take advantage of their generous offers, please let me know your name, cell phone number, whether you have a car, and if there are others with whom you live who need temporary housing.
The winter storm we experienced was extraordinary. Both Alamance and Guilford counties declared states of emergency because of the unprecedented magnitude of regional power outages. Scores of university staff, faculty, students, and community support personnel worked around the clock this weekend to provide services, meet student needs, and bring the campus back to its normal activities. Throughout this challenging weekend our campus has shown patience, resilience and mutual support, all indications of the good will that characterizes our university community.
Be aware that many people in surrounding neighborhoods and towns remain without power, and please be vigilant when approaching utility trucks, areas where debris has yet to be cleared, and intersections without traffic lights, which you should treat as a four-way stop.
Best wishes,
Smith Jackson

MESSAGE from SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 2014
Dear Parents,
As you likely are aware, an extended snow and ice storm on Thursday and Friday caused considerable damage across North Carolina. Alamance County, which Elon calls home, has been in a state of emergency due to downed trees and widespread power outages. Power has since been fully restored to most areas of campus, except in the Danieley Center residential neighborhood, where emergency lights and fire alarms remain offline. We therefore are not allowing students to stay in those residence halls overnight. Our Student Life team has worked nonstop since yesterday to assist anyone affected by this disruption. Students who live in residence halls without electricity have already been provided temporary housing and food in the Moseley Campus Center, with showers in the Koury Athletic Center.
We understand your concerns and promise to provide for the Danieley residents, and any students who reside off campus without power, until their power is restored. On a personal note, I am especially proud of the great patience and good will shown by your sons and daughters in what has been a very challenging weekend for our community.
