CT Coastal Clean-Up
Saturday, April 26 from 3-5 p.m.
Long Wharf Nature Preserve, New Haven
To register for this service project, click here (R.S.V.P. needed by April 22)
Tucked beside the bustling I-95 corridor in New Haven, this 24-acre preserve is a mixture of tidal wetlands, marshes and beaches. It is supported by the New Haven Land Trust and the Garden Club of New Haven and offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the importance of seaside ecosystems. It is also used as an outdoor classroom for the New Haven school system.
Due to its proximity to I-95, it was at risk of having part of its acreage consumed as part of a Department of Transportation project in 2011, but the Land Trust won its fight to preserve it in its entirety. Maintaining it is difficult, however, and they need help. Please join us as we help prepare it for spring and summer use. Long Wharf Nature Preserve is a valuable urban respite in need of support, and for those of you with children, this is an ideal way to introduce community involvement in a positive and enjoyable way. They can run relatively free and do as much or as little as they wish—a win win.
Details: Gloves and trash bags will be provided, but it is recommended that you bring water and wear boots, as you may need to muck into salt marshes and wetland areas to retrieve litter. NOTE: No restroom facilities are available onsite, but there are some a short drive away.
Directions: Address is entered as Long Wharf Drive, New Haven. Parking is available in the lot about a 5-minute walk north of the trailhead (across from the hot dog stands near the Vietnam Memorial Monument).
By Car: From I-95 North, take Exit 46. Turn left at the end of the ramp and left again at the third
