Expert panelists will share diverse views on school funding in a McKinnon Hall “Community Connections” program designed to foster conversation on current events in a respectful environment.
Funding for public education is the theme of an April 16 forum that will bring together students, faculty, experts and residents of Alamance County for a constructive dialogue on ways to help support local school systems.
The third and final installment of the 2013-14 “Community Connections” program co-hosted by Elon University and the Times-News newspaper takes place from 7-8:15 p.m. in McKinnon Hall inside the university’s Moseley Center.
Invited panelists include:
– Darrell Allison, president of Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina
– Jeff Carpenter, assistant professor in the School of Education
– Lillie Cox, superintendent of Alamance Burlington School System
– Dennis Riddell, North Carolina state legislator
After brief panelist statements to open the forum, organizers will ask questions submitted in advance of the program.
A reception following the event will provide space to both listen to and participate in meaningful dialogue about the critical issue of the funding of public education in Alamance County and, more broadly, in both North Carolina and the nation. This event will be covered by WSOE 89.3 radio and Elon Local News with live streaming on elonlocalnews.com.
The goal of Community Connections forums is to create thoughtful dialog with members of the university community as well as those who in live in Alamance County and the surrounding area. Previous forums have explored issues surrounding health care and poverty.
