Janison Dillon named director of the NC Center for Financial Literacy

Janison Dillon, Elon Law alumna, Class of 2013, recently named director of the NC Center for Financial Literacy.[/caption]The News & Observer article about the NC Center for Financial Literacy reports that the center will operate out of the Raleigh headquarters of the North Carolina Bankers Association and will focus initially on improving financial literacy for K-12 students through new institutional partnerships across the state.

“But the center’s focus isn’t limited to public school students,” the News & Observer article said. “It also intends to function as a clearinghouse for ideas to promote financial literacy for every citizen of North Carolina.”

Dillon forsees new technology playing a significant role in the work of the NC Center for Financial Literacy.

“The first step for the Center will be to address standards and curriculum in the North Carolina public schools that will incorporate digital solutions to immerse the system with financial education,” Dillon said in a North Carolina Bankers Association announcement of the NC Center for Financial Literacy.

“Jan Dillon will be a valuable asset as the banking industry in North Carolina works tirelessly to expand the foundation and advancement of financial education throughout the state’s 100 counties,” said Thad Woodard, President & CEO of the North Carolina Bankers Association.

At Elon Law, Dillon was a Leadership Fellow, secretary of the Student Bar Association and an active member of Phi Alpha Delta and the Women’s Law Association. She was a recipient of The Donald and Lucy Dancer Endowed Scholarship. While a law student, Dillon clerked at Wyatt Early Harris Wheeler LLP in High Point, North Carolina (summer 2011), served as a North Carolina State Bar Intern and as a legal extern for the Guilford County Nonprofit Consortium/Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP (summer 2012), and worked as a student assistant in the development office at Elon Law (2011-2013). Her philanthropic and civic leadership experience includes services a member of the board of directors and grants committee of the Friends of the Wake County Guardian ad Litem, supporting legal advocacy for abused and neglected children in North Carolina.

In 2010, Dillon earned a Bachelor of Science in political science and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Appalachian State University. While at Appalachian State, she helped plan the “Free to Breathe Lung Cancer 5K” fundraiser, interned at Capua Law Firm, PA, and coached a Watauga County Parks & Recreation Little League basketball team. A political science honor student, her senior honors thesis explored language access in North Carolina courts. She served as president of Chi Omega Fraternity, the Pi Kappa Chapter, as well as director of academic affairs for the Appalachian State Student Government Association. Dillon has been recognized as a member of Order of Omega, the Greek academic honor society, and Pi Gamma Mu, the national social science honor society.
