The Department of Sport and Event Management hopes to make as much as $50,000 this summer for its endowed scholarship fund by managing a golf course concession tent when North Carolina hosts the U.S. Open Championships.
Elon University’s Department of Sport and Event Management is recruiting volunteers to help it run a concession tent at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club for the men’s and women’s 2014 U.S. Open Championships.
Sponsored by the U.S. Golf Association, the two championships run back-to-back from June 9-22, and a group of Elon University professors and students is attempting to fill 1,180 shifts with the offer of free admission to the golf event on days of service.
Volunteer shifts include three Pro-Am dates and the four tournament dates for the men (June 9-15), and two Pro-Am dates and four tournament dates for the women (June 17-22).
This is the second time the Department of Sport and Event Management has assisted with concessions at the U.S. Open. In 2005, the last time the U.S. Open visited Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C., faculty and students operated a smaller concession operation and made more than $16,000 to start the department’s endowed scholarship fund.
Volunteers will work eight-hour shifts cooking on grills, running cash registers and handling other responsibilities as needed.
Sport and Event Management volunteers led by Associate Professor Hal Walker welcome anyone from the community who wishes to serve and are especially hopeful that Elon students, alumni, faculty and staff, parents and friends of the university will have interest in the opportunity.
The department is staffing the tent in conjunction with the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance and Sport Management.
