She succeeds her colleague in the economics department, Thomas Tiemann, who is retiring at the end of this academic year.
Das joined the Elon faculty in 1996 and has primary expertise in international trade and finance, industrial organization, economics of development, economics of gender and applied econometrics. She is known as an energetic teacher, student mentor and productive scholar, and her undergraduate and graduate courses are noted for their rigor.
“Endowed professorships at Elon convey excellence in teaching, scholarship and student mentoring as well as broader institutional leadership,” noted Leo M. Lambert, Elon University President. “Professor Das’ passion for her discipline, for the Love School and for Elon overall is compelling.”
“Tina Das is an outstanding representative of Elon University and the Love School of Business, and this recognition is well deserved,” said Love School Dean Raghu Tadepalli. “She has a reputation as being one of the most demanding professors and it is no exaggeration to say that her classes are considered to be among the most challenging in the business school. Her leadership of the Business Fellows program has been outstanding and the program has seen significant enhancements in its curriculum and rigor.”
On May 14 Das received Elon’s Daniels-Danieley Award for Excellence in Teaching, the university’s highest honor for contributions in the classroom. She has also received dean’s awards in the Love School of Business for excellence in service, research and teaching. She is the author of more than 30 journal articles on business and economics topics and has made scores of conference and workshop presentations around the world. She also served a three-year term as vice president and board of trustees member for the Omicron Delta Epsilon Economics Honors Society, and was faculty co-advisor for Issues in Political Economy, a student-edited journal focused on undergraduate research in economics.
At Elon, Das serves as a member of the Isabella Cannon Study Abroad Committee, the Long-Range Planning Committee and the Fellows Advisory Board. She has provided service on numerous boards and committees for the university and the Love School of Business, including Academic Council and the Promotion and Tenure Committee.
In addition to teaching economics courses on campus, Das has led several Winter Term and semester courses abroad, including courses in Turkey, Greece and England. She also teaches courses in Elon’s MBA program and leads an MBA summer study abroad course.
Das has a doctorate in economics from the University of Cincinnati, master’s degrees in economics from the University of Cincinnati and the University of Calcutta (India), and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Presidency College in India.
The Lincoln Financial Professorship was originally endowed as the Jefferson Pilot Professorship to provide additional financial support for an outstanding Elon faculty member. Jefferson Pilot Corporation was a Fortune 500 company based in Greensboro, N.C., that provided insurance services and broadcast communications operations. Jefferson Pilot merged with Lincoln Financial in 2006 and the company’s insurance division continues to be based in Greensboro.
